What DPI Do You Need for T-Shirt Printing?
For t-shirt printing, 150 DPI is the floor and 300 DPI is what you actually want. Printful asks for at least 150 DPI on most products and recommends staying between 150 and 300. Printify recommends 300 DPI for standard apparel. So if you only remember one number, make it 300 at the print size you’ll use, and you’ll never get a “low resolution” warning. I’ve uploaded thousands of designs across Merch, Etsy, and Printify, and DPI is the single most common reason a file gets flagged. It’s also the easiest thing to get right once you stop thinking in DPI and start thinking in pixels.
DPI only means something at a size
Here’s the part that trips people up. DPI (dots per inch) is not a property of your file by itself. It’s pixels divided by inches. A 3600px wide image is “300 DPI” if you print it 12 inches wide, and it’s “150 DPI” if you stretch it to 24 inches wide. Same file, two different DPI numbers, depending on how big it prints.
That’s why “what DPI is my image” is the wrong question. The right question is: how many pixels do I need for the size I’m printing? Once you know your print width in inches, the math is just inches times DPI.
- 12 inches wide at 300 DPI = 3,600 pixels
- 12 inches wide at 150 DPI = 1,800 pixels
A standard adult front print on a tee is around 12 inches wide. So a clean target is a file that’s at least 3,600 pixels on the long edge. Hit that and you’re at 300 DPI for a normal chest print with room to spare.
The numbers Printful and Printify actually want
I pulled these straight from both suppliers so you’re not guessing.

Printify specifically recommends 4,500 x 5,400 px for a full-front print, which is exactly 15 x 18 inches at 300 DPI. Printful’s standard front print area is closer to 12 x 16. Either way, if your file is around 4,000 to 4,500 pixels on the long edge, you’re covered for almost any DTG shirt placement.
A note on big all-over products. For things like leggings, blankets, and tapestries, Printify drops the requirement to 120 to 150 DPI, because those files would be enormous at 300 and you view them from farther away. Shirts are seen up close, so don’t apply that logic to a tee.
Why 300 and not higher
You might think more is always better. It isn’t, in a way that matters. DTG and most printing tops out around 300 DPI of usable detail. Send a 600 DPI file and the printer throws away the extra. All you’ve done is make a heavier upload (Printful caps at 200 MB, Printify at 100 MB for PNG/JPG) that takes longer to push.
So 300 DPI at your real print size is the sweet spot. Below 150 and you’ll see soft, pixelated edges, especially on text and thin lines. Above 300 and you’re just burning bandwidth.
File format and color, since they ride along with DPI
DPI gets all the attention, but two other settings break files just as often.
- Use PNG with a transparent background for DTG shirts. If you upload a JPG with a white background, that white box prints onto the garment. This is the most common beginner mistake I see, and it’s a separate issue from resolution. If your design has a square white edge in the file, you’ve got a background problem, not a DPI problem. - Export in sRGB, not CMYK. Both suppliers run RGB through their own color engines, and uploading CMYK can shift your colors in ways you didn’t intend.
A file can be a perfect 300 DPI and still come out wrong because it was the wrong format or color space. All three have to be right.
How I hit the right resolution without thinking about it
My actual habit is dumb and reliable: I generate or build every design so the long edge is at least 4,000 pixels, and I keep it transparent PNG from the start. At 4,000+ px I’m above 300 DPI for any normal shirt print, and I never have to recheck per product.
If you’re making designs with AI, this is where it gets annoying, because a lot of generators hand you a 1,024 or 2,048 pixel image, which is too small for a full front print at 300 DPI. Quick gut-check before you upload
- Long edge at least 3,600 px for a standard front, 4,500 px for full front
- Transparent PNG for DTG, sRGB color
- View it at 100 percent zoom; if edges look soft there, they’ll print soft
If you’re not sure your AI-generated file is big enough for a full-size shirt print, open it and check the pixel dimensions before you build the product. A 1,024px image will print fine as a 3-inch pocket logo and fall apart as a 12-inch front. The size, not the look on your screen, is what the printer cares about.
