Etsy's AI Policy: What Is Actually Allowed in 2026
Etsy allows AI-generated designs. What it does not allow is passing off a digital file as handmade, using someone else’s intellectual property, or misrepresenting how an item was made. Almost every “Etsy banned my AI art” story I have read turns out to be one of those three, not the AI itself. Here is what the policy actually requires, how I list AI work on my own shops, and what to do if a listing comes down.
The rule that actually matters
Etsy is a marketplace with a handmade policy, and the policy is about disclosure and involvement, not about tools. You are expected to be the designer, to describe your process honestly, and to declare a production partner if someone else physically makes the item.
For a print-on-demand seller using AI, that means three things are true at once:
- You designed it. You wrote the prompt, chose the output, edited it, prepared the print file. That is design work under Etsy’s framing, the same as using Photoshop.
- A production partner makes it. Printful, Printify, Gelato or whoever prints and ships is a production partner, and Etsy requires you to list them. This is not optional, and it is the single most common compliance gap I see.
- You do not claim what is not true. Do not call an AI-assisted design “hand drawn”, and do not imply you painted something you generated.
Do those and you are inside the policy. The AI part is not the risky part.
What actually gets listings removed
In order of how often I have seen it happen:
- Intellectual property. A character, a logo, a band, a sports team, a movie quote, a brand’s trade dress. AI makes it very easy to produce something that looks close to protected work, and rights holders run automated sweeps. This is the number one cause of takedowns, and it has nothing to do with how the image was made.
- Missing production partner. Selling a printed item without declaring who prints it is a policy violation on its own.
- Handmade misrepresentation. Describing a printed, drop-shipped item as handmade or hand-painted.
- Trademarked phrases. Common-sounding slogans are often registered. Check before you print text.
Notice that “used an AI tool” is not on the list.
How to describe an AI design honestly
I do not lead with “AI-generated” in the title, because it is not what buyers search for and it does not help the listing. I do describe the process accurately in the description, in plain language, for example: “Original design created by me using AI-assisted digital tools, then prepared for print. Printed and shipped by my production partner.”
That sentence does three jobs: it is truthful, it establishes you as the designer, and it acknowledges the production partner. If a buyer or a reviewer asks how it was made, the answer is already on the page.
What I avoid: claiming the art is hand illustrated, using “handmade” as a keyword on a printed item, and staying vague when a customer asks directly.
If a listing gets deactivated
- Read the exact reason. Etsy names the policy. IP and handmade violations need different fixes.
- Do not relist the same file. Repeat violations escalate to account level, which is the real risk.
- If it is IP, remove the design from every product and check the rest of your shop for the same motif.
- If it is a production partner or description issue, fix the field and appeal. These are usually resolved.
- Appeal once, calmly, with facts. Explain your process: you designed it, here is the production partner, here is the description.
The account-level stakes are what matter. One removed listing is survivable. A pattern of the same violation is not.
What this means in practice
I sell AI-assisted designs on Etsy and have not had a listing removed for the AI part. Everything I have had removed over the years came from a design that touched somebody’s IP, which was true long before AI existed. The tool changed how fast I can produce; it did not change the rules.
If you want the legal side of ownership rather than the marketplace side, I covered that separately in can you legally sell AI-generated designs on Etsy and can you use AI images for commercial use. For whether they actually sell, do AI designs sell on Etsy is the honest version.
Common questions
Do I have to disclose that a design is AI-generated on Etsy? You must describe your item and process accurately. Stating plainly that you created the design with AI-assisted tools satisfies that, and it belongs in the description rather than the title.
Is AI art against Etsy’s terms? No. Misrepresenting how an item was made, and selling other people’s IP, are.
Do I need to list a production partner if I use Printify? Yes. Any third party that produces or ships your physical item is a production partner and must be declared.
Can Etsy tell if an image is AI-generated? Detection is unreliable and it is not the trigger for most removals. IP matches and policy fields are.
Is selling AI designs riskier than selling my own illustrations? The risk profile is the same one every POD seller has: intellectual property and accurate description. AI raises the volume of designs you can make, which raises the number of chances to trip over IP if you are careless.
