Best AI Mockup Generator for Print on Demand (2026)
The best mockup generator for print on demand is not one tool, it’s a stack of two. Use your supplier’s free generator (Printful or Printify) for the accurate “this is what you get” photo, then use an AI mockup generator or a template library for the lifestyle shots that actually earn the click.
There are three kinds of mockup tools, and mixing them up is how you end up paying for a subscription that makes your listing look exactly like the one next to it. Here’s how they differ, what each one really costs as of September 2026, and the stack I’d pick at each stage.
The three kinds of mockup tools
1. Template mockup libraries (Placeit, Canva, Kittl, Mockey). Someone photographed a model or a mug once, and you drop your design into that photo. Fast, predictable, usually cheap. The catch: thousands of other sellers are dropping their designs into the same photo. Scroll any big Etsy niche and you’ll see the same woman in the same beige sweatshirt on a dozen listings.
2. Supplier generators (Printful, Printify). Free, and accurate to the product that will actually ship, because it’s the supplier’s own blank. The catch: flat and plain. Great proof, weak bait.
3. AI mockup and product photo generators (LzyPOD, Dynamic Mockups’ AI feature, Printify’s paid AI mockups, Pebblely, Photoroom). They generate a new scene instead of reusing a fixed photo, so your listing doesn’t look like everyone else’s. The catch: the image is generated, so you have to check that the print looks right before it goes live.
The mistake is using a type-1 tool for everything, or making type-2 images do the selling.

Supplier generators: Printful and Printify
Start here, always. Printful says all mockups for its products are free and you can download unlimited high-resolution images once you sign up. Printify’s generator is also free, with unlimited watermark-free downloads, no card, and 2,000+ products, including flat lays and some lifestyle scenes.
These are the most honest images you’ll ever put on a listing, because they show the exact blank the customer receives. That’s why I use one as the plain “what you get” photo on every listing. If you haven’t picked a supplier yet, read Printful vs Printify for beginners first, since the mockup library comes with the supplier choice.
Printify also sells AI mockups, where you describe a scene and it generates one. That’s on Premium only, from $39 a month or $24.99 a month billed yearly. Worth it if you already pay for Premium, not worth buying just for mockups.
Template libraries: Placeit, Canva, Kittl, Mockey
Placeit calls itself the largest mockup library online and lists unlimited downloads from $7.47 a month, with commercial use included. There’s a free account, but the pricing page doesn’t spell out what it gets you. Placeit is still the fastest way to get fifty different scenes of one design. The downside is the reason it’s fast: everyone uses the same scenes. I wrote a longer take in Placeit alternative.
Canva has a Mockups feature that works on the free plan, and Canva says free users can create up to 2,500 mockups. If you already design in Canva, it’s the easiest start. I couldn’t confirm Canva Pro’s current price from Canva’s own page, and it varies by region, so check before you upgrade.
Kittl is a design editor first, with 10,000+ premium templates and mockups on paid plans. Pro is $12 a month billed yearly or $15 monthly. The trap: Kittl’s free plan is personal use only, no commercial rights, so free-plan designs are not for your shop. More in Kittl alternative.
Mockey offers a free plan and paid plans from $7 a month, covering mockups and a set of AI tools.
Template libraries are predictable. On Etsy, looking predictable is also the problem.
AI mockup generators
This is where the “unique scene” advantage lives. Instead of reusing a fixed photo, the tool generates a new model shot or lifestyle scene around your product.
Dynamic Mockups sits between templates and AI. It has a regular mockup library, lets you upload your own Photoshop templates, integrates with Etsy and Shopify, and has an AI feature called MockAnything that turns an image into a lifestyle mockup. The free plan gives 50 one-time credits plus a few free AI generations a day. Pro is $15 a month billed yearly ($19 monthly) with 3,600 credits a year. A normal mockup export costs 1 credit, an AI one costs 5 to 15. Strong pick for big catalogs.
Pebblely generates backgrounds around product photos, from $9 a month for 30 images up to $39 for 500. It’s built for physical product photography, so it’s better for mugs and posters than for a shirt on a person. Photoroom is similar, with AI backgrounds and AI fashion models on its paid plans. I couldn’t read a clear public price from its pricing page, so check it yourself.
LzyPOD is my tool, so weigh this accordingly. It makes the design (1 credit) and then the mockups (3 credits each): it puts your design onto a garment or product and generates realistic model or lifestyle photos, so you’re not picking from a fixed template library. It can also make short product videos, 10 credits per 5-second clip. Free to try with no card, paid plans from $19 a month. More detail on the AI mockup generator page.
Where it’s weaker, plainly: the mockups are generated, so you need to check that the print looks right (placement, colors, text) before you list. It isn’t a template library with thousands of fixed scenes, so if you want the exact same scene across 200 listings for a uniform shop look, a template tool does that better. And for the main “what you get” image, supplier-accurate flat mockups from Printful or Printify are still the right call. I use them myself.
What makes a mockup sell on Etsy
Five rules I follow, whatever the tool:
- First photo must be accurate. Whatever’s in slot one, the product has to match what ships. If it’s a lifestyle shot, make sure the print, color, and placement are true. Accuracy cuts “not what I ordered” messages and returns.
- Lifestyle shots in photos 2 to 5. This is where AI mockups and template scenes earn their keep. Different rooms, a model, a close-up on the print, a hand for scale.
- Include one plain supplier mockup. Somewhere in the set, the boring accurate one.
- Keep sizing consistent. Same aspect ratio across every photo, product centered, so Etsy’s thumbnail crop doesn’t chop the design.
- Meet Etsy’s image guidance. Etsy’s help page asks for at least 2000px on the shortest side and suggests images that work in square and rectangular crops. Specs change, so verify on Etsy’s help center.

The stack I’d pick, by stage
Just starting, $0 budget. Printful or Printify for the accurate image, Canva Mockups for a few lifestyle scenes. Try LzyPOD’s free credits on your best design to see if a unique scene beats the template ones.
First sales, around $20 to $40 a month. Keep the supplier mockup. Add one tool for lifestyle shots: either a template library (Placeit, Mockey) if you want speed and uniformity, or an AI mockup generator if your niche is crowded and every listing looks the same. Pick one, not three.
Testing designs with ads. Unique creatives matter more here because people see the same ad images over and over. AI mockups and short product clips are worth it for ad testing. See how to test POD designs with Facebook ads.
Big catalog, hundreds of listings. Dynamic Mockups for bulk template exports and store sync, supplier mockups for accuracy, and AI mockups only on your top sellers where a unique hero image is worth the extra check.
For the design side of the stack, best AI image generators for print on demand covers which engine to use per design type, and AI tools for print on demand covers the rest of the workflow.
If your listings look like every other listing in the search grid, try generating a model shot for one design at app.lzypod.com, no card needed, and put it next to your current template mockup. If the template one still looks better, keep using it.
Common questions
What is the best AI mockup generator for print on demand?
It depends on the job. For the accurate main image, use your supplier’s free generator (Printful or Printify). For unique lifestyle and model shots, use an AI mockup generator like LzyPOD or Dynamic Mockups’ AI feature. For fast, predictable template scenes, Placeit or Canva.
Is there a free mockup generator for print on demand?
Yes. Printful and Printify both have free mockup generators for their own products. Canva Mockups works on the free plan. LzyPOD, Dynamic Mockups, and Mockey have free options to try, with limits.
Are AI mockups allowed on Etsy?
Etsy expects listing photos to represent the item accurately. An AI mockup is fine as long as the design, colors, and product match what the buyer receives. Check every generated image before listing, and keep one plain supplier mockup in your photos.
Why do my template mockups look like everyone else’s?
Because template libraries reuse the same photos across all their customers. That’s the tradeoff for speed and low price. Swap at least your hero shot for a scene other sellers don’t have, whether that’s your own photo or an AI-generated one.
Do I still need Printful or Printify mockups if I use AI mockups?
Yes. Supplier mockups show the exact blank that ships, which is the most trustworthy image on your listing. AI mockups are for the lifestyle photos around it, not a replacement for it.
